Cell line misidentification has been identified as a major concern affecting scientific research. As reports of misidentification have surfaced, there have been calls for greater diligence in characterizing the cell lines prior to publication. The ATCC Standards Development Organization has released a consensus standard for human cell line authentication based upon the use of short tandem repeat (STR) loci (Authentication of Human Cell Lines: Standardization of STR Profiling [ASN-0002]). We have developed new protocols/systems for generating STR profiles from DNA purified from human samples, human cell lines, as well as direct amplification methods from cells immobilized on transport matrices (e.g., FTA™ cards).
